Pete Doherty released, € 5,000 fine for use of cocaine

WHITE AS SNOW The British singer was arrested in the night from Thursday to Friday shortly after buying cocaine in the ninth arrondissement of Paris.

British singer Pete Doherty was released Saturday after two days in police custody in Paris for narcotics use. The prosecution has demanded a fine of 5,000 euros against him under penalty of imprisonment, learned AFP from concordant sources. The Libertines member, aged 40, was arrested on the night of Thursday to Friday shortly after buying cocaine in the ninth arrondissement of the capital.

The singer "has been the subject of a penal order [a simplified judicial procedure] for the use of narcotics with requisitions of 100 days-fine to 50 euros," said Saturday the prosecutor of Paris. This sentence, which can be converted into imprisonment if the fine is not paid, must still be approved by a judge of the Paris court. According to his lawyer Arash Derambarsh, Pete Doherty, who is at the beginning of a long tour in Europe and mainly in Britain, "committed to being followed full-time by an addictologist and a doctor so as not to fall back into the temptation ".

    An eventful arrest

Pete Doherty, who had been struggling to oppose his arrest, was intoxicated, according to a police source. At the time of his arrest, he had tried to get rid of two bags containing cocaine, including an open and partly consumed, said the source. His lawyer had denounced to AFP "a muscular and disproportionate interpellation", pointing out that the singer had "only one gram of cocaine" on him.

"He is not a delinquent, he is undergoing a rehab in France and England and wants to focus on the rest of his artistic career," he added. Pete Doherty, also known as former model Kate Moss's boyfriend, has repeatedly made headlines for her drug-related excesses. In July 2012, he was thrown out of a luxury detoxification center in Thailand for not showing a willingness to fight his addiction to heroin.
