Russia: a woman arrested with 2 kilos of gold in her shoes

She wanted to go to China with gold bars: a Russian was arrested by customs officers in the Far East with about 2 kilograms of the precious metal hidden in his shoes.

"The young woman walked unnaturally [...] and was nervous before passing the customs" at a checkpoint at the Russian-Chinese border in the city of Zabaikalsk, said Tuesday the Regional Customs Service in a statement.

After a metal detector search, she "voluntarily surrendered eight gold ingots, weighing a total of 1863 grams, which were attached to her soles with tape," added the same source.

According to expert reports, the value of ingots, "handcrafted", exceeds 5 million rubles (more than 70 900 euros).

The young woman claimed to be transporting gold at the request of a Chinese national.

A survey for "strategic resource traffic" has been opened.

Since the beginning of the year, several Russians have been arrested in Zabaikalsk for attempts to transfer gold to China, according to the Customs Service.

In August, a Russian citizen had tried to cross the border with ten gold bars also hidden under the soles of her shoes.

Gold panning is a widespread practice in Russia, one of the world's largest gold producers with nearly 300 tonnes mined in 2018.

Last month, at least 17 people were killed when a dam broke in an illegal gold mine in the Siberian region of Krasnoyarsk.
